When Football Gets Faster: Why Technical Ability Matters

Football changes as young players move through the age groups. The game can become quicker, there can be less space available, and players often have less time to decide what to do with the ball.

A skill that felt comfortable at one age can suddenly become much more difficult when the pace increases.

This is one of the reasons technical ability becomes so important as young footballers develop. Being comfortable with the ball gives players a stronger foundation to deal with the increasing demands of the game.

There Is Less Time to Think

As football gets faster, players often have less time to make decisions.

A player might receive the ball and immediately have an opponent closing them down. Instead of having several seconds to decide what to do, they may need to control the ball, look up and choose their next action almost immediately.

The more comfortable a player is with basic technical skills, the easier it can be to focus on what to do next, rather than worrying about simply controlling the ball.

There Is Less Space

As players progress, they often find themselves playing in tighter areas with opponents closer to them.

This means having a good first touch and being able to keep the ball under control becomes increasingly important.

Players need to be able to:

  • Control the ball in different situations

  • Change direction

  • Turn away from pressure

  • Move with the ball

  • Pass accurately

  • Keep possession when space is limited

These skills can help players become more comfortable when they don't have much room to work with.

Decisions Have to Happen Faster

Technical ability and decision-making are closely connected.

It's not enough to be able to pass, dribble or control the ball. Players also need to recognise when to use those skills.

Should they pass?

Should they turn?

Should they carry the ball forward?

Should they keep possession?

As the game becomes quicker, players need to process these situations more quickly too. Developing good technical foundations can give them more confidence when making those decisions.

Mistakes Can Become More Noticeable

When the pace of a game increases, small mistakes can have a bigger impact.

A heavy touch might give an opponent an opportunity to win the ball. A slow pass might be intercepted. Taking too long to make a decision can mean that an opportunity has already disappeared.

This doesn't mean young players should be afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are still an important part of learning.

Instead, it highlights why regular practice is important. The more opportunities players have to work on their technique, the more comfortable they can become using those skills when the pressure increases.

Players Need to Be Comfortable Under Pressure

One of the biggest changes as football develops is the amount of pressure players face.

There may be an opponent nearby, teammates moving into different positions and only a small amount of space available.

Players who are comfortable with the ball can have more options available to them because they don't have to panic when they are put under pressure.

Good technical ability isn't about performing lots of fancy tricks. It's about being able to control, pass, move and make decisions effectively when the game demands it.

Technical Development Takes Practice

Technical ability doesn't suddenly appear when a player moves into a new age group.

It develops through regular practice and repeated opportunities to work with the ball.

Team football provides an important part of a young player's development, giving them the opportunity to use their skills in matches and learn how to play as part of a team.

But additional training can provide another opportunity to focus on technical development and spend more time working on areas such as close control, passing, movement, skill development, decision-making and awareness in tight spaces.

This is particularly useful as the demands of the game continue to increase.

Supporting the Next Stage of Development

Every young footballer develops at their own pace. Some players may already feel very comfortable with the ball, while others may need more time and practice to build confidence in particular areas.

The important thing is to keep developing.

As football gets faster and more challenging, having strong technical foundations can help young players adapt to the changing demands of the game.

Develop Your Technical Ability With SS United

At SS United, our Thursday Technical Training sessions give young players an additional opportunity to work on their technical development in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.

Sessions are available for Years 2–6 at Warlingham School Sports Centre, and are open to boys and girls of all abilities.

The sessions focus on areas including close control, passing, movement, skill development, decision-making and awareness in tight spaces, giving players another opportunity to practise and develop alongside their regular team football.
