How to Keep Your Child's Football Skills Sharp This Half Term
Half term is a great opportunity for children to relax, spend time with family and enjoy their favourite activities.
For young footballers, it's also a chance to stay active and keep enjoying the game. The good news? You don't need hours of practice to keep football fun!
Here are five simple ways to enjoy football this half term.
1. Keep Practice Short and Fun
Even 10–15 minutes with a football can be enjoyable. Try a few simple challenges, practise some skills or see how many passes you can complete without losing control.
2. Practise the Basics
Use a little time to work on the skills players use every week:
⚽ Dribbling and ball control
🎯 Passing with a family member or friend
🔄 Turning and changing direction
👟 Practising with both feet
Keep it simple and focus on enjoying the process.
3. Play With Family and Friends
Football doesn't always need to be organised training. Try a penalty shootout, a small-sided game or a fun dribbling challenge.
Playing for enjoyment gives children the freedom to experiment and be creative.
4. Remember to Rest
Children don't need to train every day to improve. Half term is also a chance to recharge, relax and enjoy other activities.
Encourage your child to play if they want to, but don't put pressure on them to practise throughout the holidays.
5. Keep Looking for Opportunities to Develop
Half term is a great time to enjoy football at your own pace. When regular sessions return, additional training can give young players more opportunities to practise and develop their skills.
At SS United, our Thursday Technical Training sessions focus on close control, passing, movement, skill development and decision-making.
Sessions take place at Warlingham School Sports Centre for Years 2–6, with boys and girls of all abilities welcome.
